The Scientist's Dilemma: From Lab to Boardroom

Updated: Jul 24

A scientist in white coat and looking at book to learn how to sell a pen. A pen is on the table in front of him.
Sell me this pen

I have met a brilliant scientist who'd been producing groundbreaking research papers. When he was tasked with commercializing a government-funded laboratory, he saw it as a chance to climb the corporate ladder. However, his journey was far from smooth.

With a PhD in life science and a background in research, he relied on book-based knowledge to navigate marketing and sales. In job interviews, he'd ask candidates to "sell me this pen" - but his own approach felt forced and awkward.

The result?

A team of scientists struggling to make sense of the commercial world. Despite initial fanfare, commercialization and scaling up operations failed to gain traction.
